Begging in the ward

  ·

Please be vigilant regarding Beggars in the area.

It has come to NPT’s attention that many of the beggars in the area are not homeless as depicted and are in receipt of full state benefits, and the money that they are making is used to feed a drug addiction.

The area’s of interest are around the NISA Store, Town Street, Beeston. Dewsbury Road, Beeston and ASDA Middleton.

The public should consider before giving beggars money, that the money is potentially being fed into the organised crime drug network. OCG’s are responsible for the violent crime that we are experiencing in Leeds. Involving the use of firearms and machetes. With the suspects and victims often being children which have been criminally exploited in the drugs trade.

Inner South NPT will signpost beggars to drug support services and work closely with partnership agencies to offer all the support these people need, we are also issuing Community Protection Notices to persistent beggars. Which prevent them from begging or loitering within a specified area. Persistent offenders will be prosecuted.
